How to Photograph a Tire for a Lettering Quote

A useful tire photograph answers three questions: which tire is being customized, where the artwork is intended to sit, and what might interrupt that area. A dramatic three-quarter view can show the style of a vehicle, but it is a poor substitute for a straight-on reference when discussing dimensions. Send a small, organized photo set together with written measurements.

Take a complete wheel photograph first

With the vehicle parked, position the camera opposite the wheel center. Include the entire tire and rim, keep the camera level, and avoid cropping the proposed lettering area. Choose even lighting so that raised lettering and ribs remain visible. Reflections from a wet or freshly dressed tire can conceal details; a photograph should document the surface you actually have.

Label this image with the wheel position, such as front left. If the front and rear tires differ, photograph both. Do not assume a single front-wheel picture represents the whole set.

Add two kinds of close-up

First, photograph the full tire brand, model and size markings. Second, photograph the area where you want the lettering. Include raised ribs, existing letters and other features beside that area rather than showing only a small smooth-looking patch.

Use a ruler as a visible scale reference where practical, but also write down the measurement. A ruler tilted toward the camera or held away from the surface can make a photo misleading. It is a reference for the discussion, not proof of an exact fit.

Use filenames such as front-left-overview and front-left-upper-area. This naming system helps prevent measurements from one tire being assigned to another during a quote.

Keep appearance and measurement separate

A mockup can help you choose wording, color and balance. It cannot establish adhesive compatibility or show every change in surface curvature. Ask for the finished artwork height and width, then check a full-size proof against the physical placement area. Do not choose a letter height by counting pixels in an uncalibrated photograph.
